This anthology houses a multitude of poems related to neurodivergence. The authors all have different backgrounds as this is an open site where anyone can publish their work. The site is searchable and poems are tagged. Some examples include a poem about  masking, the perception of “normal,” and  “praying for a neurotypical brain.” One poem details an individual’s experience with growing up and feeling like they constantly are on the outside looking in and having to hide aspects of themselves to fit in. This site could be utilized as a resource for creative writing in terms of neurodivergence. As poems from personal, first hand experiences of neurodivergence, they provide insight as to the nuances to individual experiences that caution us against generalizations and stereotypes.

The Poets.Org website of the Academy of American Poets has curated this collection of 14 poems related to mental health that were selected for teen readers (part of a series of “Poetry for Teens” on various topics).  Some themes throughout the poetry are depression, anxiety, as well as hope and resilience. Each poem includes a description of some of the themes within it as well as details about the author. The pieces span a range of time periods and a variety of authors with different backgrounds including, for example, Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath, as well as Naomi Shihab Nye and Ada Limón.

Bullet journaling to save a life

An African American woman at a predominantly white institution is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Along with therapy, she works through her struggles with various mindfulness strategies, including a method described by Ryder Carroll as “bullet journaling.” Her story encourages consideration of writing as a mental health practice, describes the author’s adaptations of the bullet journal technique, and contains links to a TED talk and a book that go into more detail about this particular approach to intentionality. Useful starting point for talking about therapeutic (and general mental health maintenance) uses of writing. Glances of POC experiences in PWI’s, though not much detail.

Creative writing as a medical instrument

“Writing stories can create better doctors.” Baruch is convinced that narrative medicine – focusing on close reading – isn’t enough to prepare physicians to deal with ambiguities, confusions and conflicts inherent in medical practice. He urges teaching them to write stories so they can hear their patients’ stories better. References and describes courses he has taught (one with an MFA creative writer) to teach medical students about characters, conflict, selecting key details … storytelling elements often emphasized in creative writing. The goal is to encourage them to struggle with words on the screen (or page) to prepare to more deeply understand the fragmented, often confusing stories presented by patients. Good preparation for a teacher contemplating a narrative assignment; maybe less so for the students themselves.

Syllabus Spanish Health Narratives

This 3000-level course is of particular interest to Spanish majors and minors with health professions interests, although readings and assignments are aimed at any Spanish student with intermediate level proficiency. Creative writing majors from English, students interested in editing and publishing, International Studies and Global Health Studies majors, Communication Studies majors with general interests in health, all have succeeded. Readings are from Latinx and Latin American authors; some in English, many in Spanish. Assignments are four creative writing projects, one that becomes a digital video.

Pulse- Voices from the Heart of Medicine

Pulse- Voices from the Heart of Medicine is an online publication that features stories, poems, haikus, and visual works from various voices within the healthcare field. Stories come from health care providers in various roles and from patients and family members.  For example, “Cultivation Also Starts With C” is a poem that uses the invasive, difficult to remove plant Japanese knotweed as a metaphor for cancer and “Another GSW” details a young doctor’s encounter with a patient who had extensive injuries from a single bullet wound, and how the experience made her consider the ramifications of gun violence in America.

Length of items ranges from 40 to 400 words for written works. Each month’s issue is on a theme (recent examples included Alone, Coming Undone, Unsung Heros) and the “New Voices” section features “stories by those whose faces and perspectives are underrepresented in media and in the health professions.”

The website offers several ways to search. For example, one can click through content by year, all the way from 2023 to 2016. When you click on a story, you can also see a lengthy list of “popular tags” that you can click on to search by subject matter. The “visual works” tab includes an option to see a slideshow of submissions, as does the “haikus” tab, which could be helpful for more efficient browsing. Other notable features are that the stories and poems tabs display a phrase from each submission as an attention-getting preview. Similarly, the “more voices” tab displays a themed photograph with each submission.

Please See Me

Content type: Health story

Online literary journal that features health-related stories in the form of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art, as well as the occasional film and interview. Issues include multiple works around a specific theme (e.g., Pain, Hope, Mental Health, Women’s Health). Work features voices of patients, providers and “healthcare consumers” from their own experiences and perspectives. Written submissions are 4000 word maximum.

Examples of featured works include: A mixed media art piece on pain, grief, and hopelessness from an artist dealing with loss and addiction (lil peep in Issue #2: Pain), a poem about medical debt (“Johns Hopkins Sues Patients, Many Low-Income, for Medical Debt” in Issue #9: Open Call), and a mother’s experience raising a son with intellectual disabilities and grappling with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis (Forgetting Aiden in Issue #1: Conversation).
