LitMed: Literature Arts Medicine Database

Scholars, educators, patients, students, and anyone interested in medical humanities can search this site for annotated entries that describe works of literature, fine art, visual art and performing art related to medicine. Housed at the NYU School of Medicine, the annotations are written by an editoral board of medical humanities scholars from across North America. Users of the site can search by words or phrases of their own, peruse an alphabetical index of titles, or use the extensive system of tags.  It is possible to narrow a search to a particular kind of work (e.g., "All visual arts" or just photography, painting/drawing, or sculpture) or to medical humanities topics (e.g., history of medicine, medical anthropology, science and medicine).  Stories by "physician" or "nurse" can also be searched.  The site has over 3000 items at the time of this submission. An entry includes a summary description of the work as well as a commentary.

Being Heard: Empathetic Artistic Interpretations of Young People Living with Serious Medical Conditions

The "Being Heard" project explores how artists can help young adults with serious medical conditions feel understood and cared for.  Young adults worked with a team that included a nurse researcher from The Institute for Integrative Health, an art therapist/social worker, and two professional artists.  Each child wrote an "I Am From" poem and then participated in an interview with an artist, who created a painting and accompanying narrative based on what they heard. The nurse researcher and art therapist then shared the painting with the child, asked for their thoughts and feelings, and offered an opportunity for the child to create a watercolor print. The exhibition at the Children's National Medical Center included eight paintings by patients between the ages of 10 and 19; the booklet from the show also includes the art work, poems and children’s responses. Taking Turns is a graphic novel that explores HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371 at the Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago during the peak of the AIDS epidemic. Through archival records, oral histories, and MK Czerwiec's first-hand experiences as a nurse on the ward, the novel sheds light on the challenges and resilience of the community during this critical period. With simple illustrations and a practical four-panel format, "Taking Turns" delivers a direct and accessible narrative, offering readers an opportunity to not only absorb the history easily, but prompting empathetic reflection for each member of the community – patients, families, and medical staff. This novel could provoke discussions about caregiver narratives, and the efficacy of graphic novels in communicating narrative.

Visual and narrative comprehension of trauma

This article argues that though art is assumed to be useful as an intuitive means of representation, its usefulness in offering insight into trauma depends on accompanying narratives. Four artists’ works considered herein illuminate how the synergistic interplay between art and expository input from personal narratives can augment comprehension of trauma”. This article includes artwork from  Luzene Hill, David Wojnarowicz, Tania Love Abramson. Luzene Hill’s work, Retracing the Trace, depicts their experience with rape and the silencing of women within our society. The art installment shows her body lying on the ground with blood red knots scattered around her body. This article could be used in a class discussion based on how trauma can be made tangible and expressed through mediums such as art.

I Have Congenital Heart Disease So I Created These Comics To Show What My Life Is Like

This is a series of short comics depicting what it is like to live with congenital heart disease (CHD). There are eight multipanel topics: “Mornings,” “Transmissions,” “To do list,” “Kind of works,” “Behavior,” “Stairs,” “Too Young,” and “More than enough.” They all portray this person’s heart as an anthropomorphized character sabotaging their health in frustrating and unpredictable ways, like that of a misbehaving child. Each comic has a caption underneath giving more context than the minimal dialogue provides. The series is honest, comedic, and ultimately inspiring. The author explains how they seek to demystify CHD and debunk stigmas around young people having heart disease or getting pacemakers as well as not “looking sick.” This would fit in well into a class on graphic narratives to teach about the advocacy through illustration and how to write effective dialogue, a premed class teaching about heart disease to provide a patient perspective on the social difficulties of living with it, or a class discussing rhetoric of illness stereotyping to better understand why and how some diseases become more stigmatized than others.

Artist describes the work displayed on this page this way: "COVERED-19 | CONVITE-19 COVERED19 is a live painting series influenced by the experiences of quarantine. Participants are invited to send a full body photograph that represents their thoughts and feelings about the COVID19 pandemic. The photograph is used to inspire the artist, Ibraim Nascimento, to create an original painting through a live video with the participant. By creating a virtual space for discussion, COVERED 19 allows the individual to tell their story. This series explores the concept of the 'new normal' and the abnormal, changes in day-to-day behavior like wearing masks, and self-reflection about the future. What will be the 'new normal'? Can we go back to our way of life post COVID-19?" Paintings could be used to discuss visual narratives, who tells stories of illness for others and how, and how people make meaning of visual representations versus oral/written storytelling. This could be done in Spanish classes from lower intermediate up, or English classes in many disciplines: health studies, media, writing courses.

Unmasked: Illustrating Covid-19 in Okoboji

Emily Mendenhall wrote a book, "Unmasked: Covid, community, and the case of Okoboji" based on 87 interviews with people in her hometown of Lake Okoboji, Iowa in 2020. This graphic narrative, illustrated by another native of Lake Okoboji, condenses that scientific/cultural report into full-color panels of comic strip interspersed with description and analysis. Much more compelling for most undergrads than a chapter of the book would be, it focuses on "cultural squabbles and social complexities of the first pandemic year in ...a tourist town in northwest Iowa." Could also illustrate the work of a medical anthropologist within her own community rather than in an exotic location.

Pulse- Voices from the Heart of Medicine

Pulse- Voices from the Heart of Medicine is an online publication that features stories, poems, haikus, and visual works from various voices within the healthcare field. Stories come from health care providers in various roles and from patients and family members.  For example, “Cultivation Also Starts With C” is a poem that uses the invasive, difficult to remove plant Japanese knotweed as a metaphor for cancer and “Another GSW” details a young doctor’s encounter with a patient who had extensive injuries from a single bullet wound, and how the experience made her consider the ramifications of gun violence in America. Length of items ranges from 40 to 400 words for written works. Each month's issue is on a theme (recent examples included Alone, Coming Undone, Unsung Heros) and the "New Voices" section features "stories by those whose faces and perspectives are underrepresented in media and in the health professions." The website offers several ways to search. For example, one can click through content by year, all the way from 2023 to 2016. When you click on a story, you can also see a lengthy list of “popular tags” that you can click on to search by subject matter. The "visual works" tab includes an option to see a slideshow of submissions, as does the "haikus" tab, which could be helpful for more efficient browsing. Other notable features are that the stories and poems tabs display a phrase from each submission as an attention-getting preview. Similarly, the “more voices” tab displays a themed photograph with each submission.

Please See Me

Online literary journal that features health-related stories in the form of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art, as well as the occasional film and interview. Issues include multiple works around a specific theme (e.g., Pain, Hope, Mental Health, Women's Health). Work features voices of patients, providers and "healthcare consumers" from their own experiences and perspectives. Written submissions are 4000 word maximum. Examples of featured works include: A mixed media art piece on pain, grief, and hopelessness from an artist dealing with loss and addiction (lil peep in Issue #2: Pain), a poem about medical debt ("Johns Hopkins Sues Patients, Many Low-Income, for Medical Debt" in Issue #9: Open Call), and a mother’s experience raising a son with intellectual disabilities and grappling with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis (Forgetting Aiden in Issue #1: Conversation).
